Modern classical styled timber daysailer/weekender designed by Naval Architect Fred Barrett.FBYD_CLASSIC_DESIGN-Model

As a result of his brilliant work in designing and engineering the GP 26 that Van Munster Boats have recently built for Bob Dempsey of Sydney, Keith Van Munster commissioned Naval Architect Fred Barrett  from Hobart to design a classically styled  yacht for personal family use.

The Design Brief was for a classic 32ft performance Daysailer/Weekender intended for shorthanded sailing and too be of modern timber construction. The yachts primary role is to be a fast daysailer with emphasis being given to the cockpit design and ergonomics to ensure comfortable seating and a good working arrangement when underway, with more than enough room for 6 crew and guests.

Fred has demonstrated his versatility in designing a beautiful classic styled yacht with a graceful sheer, low freeboard with some tumblehome in the topsides aft, blending into the overhanging curved raked transom.

A well balanced moderate displacement hull form, with full sections in the run aft for downwind speed and stability is combined with a modern bulbed fin keel and balanced spade rudder.  The appendage design has been influenced by the need to maximise performance and handling, whilst restricting the draft in order to comfortably navigate the shallow waters of many of the inlets on the NSW coast.

The rig will be fractional on Carbon spars, non overlapping head sails will ensure fast tacking and ease of handling. She will have a symmetrical spinnaker as well as code 0 reaching sails. Deck equipment has been selected for simplicity and ease of use.

A small trunk cabin provides a galley to stbd with built in icebox, gimballed stove, sink and fresh water pump, lockers and drawers, to port is a quarter berth opposite the L shaped Galley.

Port and Stbd settee berths with stowage locker backrests for comfortable sitting below decks ,there will be a pipe berth and portable toilet in the forepeak  providing  comfortable accommodation for four at sea or with an awning over the boom when at anchor.

Auxiliary power is provided by 15hp marine diesel engine with shaft and folding propeller.

Hull scantlings are to Lloyds classification for Yacht & Small Craft, the construction is traditional double layer fore and aft  tight seamed epoxy glued planking,  over epoxy laminated Flooded ( Rose) Gum Frames , the hull will be sheathed in E glass and epoxy, deck ply sheathed in Dynel set in epoxy and overlaid with Teak decking.

Cabin sides cockpit coamings and trim will be clear finished Teak.

This modern classic yacht as well as being beautiful to the eye, will be perfect for day sailing with family and friends,  weekending,  coastal offshore sailing and competitive twilight and classic yacht racing.

The construction of this yacht will demonstrate the capabilities of Van Munster Boats as all round custom  Boatbuilders.

She will not be too expensive to own and maintain, and will have that unique feel and ambience that only a classic wooden yacht  can have.

The timber has been ordered and construction will commence before Xmas 2010
